To be able to do good Search Engine Optimization or to get maximum results from your Google Adwords campaign, there is one very important thing you need to know.
What are people looking for or what search words are they using.
Top position, so what
You can have a top position in Google’s organic search results, the ones on the left side of the screen. But what does that really mean? What if these results are based on search words that might have been used a lot in the past but that are hardly used anymore today?
And your Adwords campaign may give you a nice click through rate. The percentage of people that noticed your ad and clicked on the link may be high. But if the number of views is relatively small because you use a less popular search word, the actual number of clicks may be disappointing.
Investigate
So if you decide to do some SEO or start an Adwords campaign, the first thing you should do is find out what people are actually looking for. Are they looking for ‘plc’ or for ‘controller’, for ‘computer’ or ‘pc’ or are they searching ‘four wheel drive’ instead of ’4×4′.
You will find the answers on Google Insights. Google Insights offers you the possibility to check the popularity of search words and to compare the score between different search words.
The results are shown in a graph over a selectable period of 7 days to up to several years. Giving you a good idea about trends in search words.
Do it again
Of course you need to keep on monitoring your search words because over time the situation can change. To make life easier, you can put one or more Google Insights graphs on your iGoogle page. This way you are able to see in a glance how your search words are doing.
