Google Reader

A great post yesterday by Steve Farnsworth on his blog Digital Marketing Mercenary. In his post Free Social Media Monitoring Dashboard Steve describes how to use Google as a monitoring dashboard.

Steve starts his (SlideShare) presentation with how to use booleans like AND and OR to refine searches and get better results. You may know already about using quotes and booleans like AND, OR, + and – to improve your searches. But then it gets interesting.

(You do not have a Google Account yet? Click on the SignIn button in the right top corner of the Google screen and set up you own free account.)

Google Alerts

After you have done some experimenting with getting your searches right, go to Google Alerts and insert your  search terms there.

Then select the option Deliver by Feed and you are able to receive new results corresponding to your search terms as feeds in your Google Reader account.

Google Reader

Of course you can also use Google Reader as your feed reader. Making it possible to follow your favourite websites and blogs and your Google Alerts in the same place.

Carefully craft your search terms in Google Alerts. Subscribe to feeds of your favourite sites and blogs. And organize all the information in folders. This way you are able to build your personal, comprehensive and free social media monitoring dashboard.
