To fold or not to fold

December 12, 2009

Do you fold? Is the text on your webpage(s) longer than the height of the visitor’s monitor? If that is the case your visitors need to scroll to read it all.

According to a lot of studies people don’t like scrolling. As a result, the information under the fold gets less attention. So you better keep away from the fold.

There are a lot of websites where people know by experience that there is more information below the fold. Like a search engine page, a weblog or similar. But if your website is not one of these sites, I think it is always wise to limit the amount of information on one page. If necessary better use more than one page to get your message across to the reader. And if you really need to put it all on one page, do the following:

  • the visual design of the page should make it very clear there is more information under the fold
  • use bookmarks in the top part of the page that enable people to jump directly to information below the fold

Remember that currently most people use a monitor set to a 1024×768 resolution. So you best use these values to determine the size of your pages.
