It took Google ten years to get from zero to a multi billion dollar company. Thanks to the growing need for assistance searching the ever expanding Internet.
But Google – and other search engines – has a number of disadvantages. With the Internet continuing to grow, those disadvantages play an increasingly important role. They may well be the start of the decline of Google search.
- Physical limitations
There are only ten positions available on page one for organic search results. If you are not in the top ten and therefore not on page one, there is a big chance people will not find you.
- Competition
All your competitors pay a lot of money or put a lot of energy in getting a good position on page one. That does not change the fact there are only ten positions available on that page. It only makes it harder to get there.
- Changing rules
Google keeps changing the rules. Therefore spending a lot of money/energy to get a top ten position does not guarantee you will stay there.
- Relevancy
Google uses a great number of rules and their patented PageRank algorithms to analyse and determine the relevancy (and position) of Internet pages. Are they really able to determine what the most relevant pages are? Is that not for the people that do the search to decide?
- People stop searching
Because of the overwhelming amount of information on the Internet, people stop putting energy in finding you. That means you have to go out there to find them.
Google as a company will probably survive. Because it is developing far beyond search only. But before long search will become a niche activity for niche markets.
