You can think of a lot of reasons why you should not start to engage in social media for B2B marketing. But all these reasons are a matter of who was first, the chicken or the egg.
Here are a number of reasons not to engage in social media. And they are all wrong.
- Our customers are not using social media
I am sure you will be surprised to find out how many of your customers are already using social media. There is a big chance too they have already been looking for your weblog, your Facebook or Linkedin page or your Twitter account. And if your customers are not yet there, you may be the one to encourage them and be their pioneer. Good for your company’s credit and image.
- We don’t know how to do it
You will never gain experience if you not just start using it first. Of course you will make mistakes and do things wrong. But if you correct your mistakes and keep on improving what you are doing nobody cares. And there is loads of information available on the internet on how to use social media and about what to do and what not. If you don’t start, you will never know how to do it.
- Our competitors are not using it, so why should we
Don’t you want to be first and don’t you want to keep ahead of your competitors? You can be sure that if they are not using it now, they will for sure be using it soon. Maybe sooner than you think. And your chance to be first has gone for ever.
- We have no budget
If you don’t start, gain experience and show that you are able to make it work, you can be sure there will be no budget next year too. The good thing about social media is that it is free. Yes, of course you need to put in time and energy and if it grows you will need to put in loads of time and energy. But you can start simple and build it over time. You don’t need a penny to start.
- Our employees are too busy
Okay, you need to put time and energy in social media. But what are your employees busy with? Are they answering the phone because your customers do not stop calling you? Or are they busy sending and replying to e-mails? Social media will reduce telephone calls and e-mail traffic because your customers will start looking for other ways to communicate with you. And if as a result the total amount of traffic is increasing, it means that more people are interested in your company and your products or services. Is that not what everybody wants?
- It will not work for us
How do you know if you have not tried?
I don’t care who was first, the chicken or the egg. I want to get started.
