In his post Is It Time to Stop Blogging and Start an Email Newsletter? on Gigaom.com Mathew Ingram writes about a number of influential bloggers closing down their blog in favour of sending out a subscription email newsletter.
Only a few minutes later I read Ben & Jerry’s Drops Email Marketing In Favor Of Social Media on the Hubspot Blog. The Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Company announcing in an email to their subscribers last week that they will be discontinuing their regular email marketing campaigns, in favor of social media.
It is nice to see different people and companies go different ways. In this case the bloggers think they are able to deliver better quality using an email newsletter. At the same time Ben & Jerry’s feels people prefer contact through social media instead of through their email inbox.
You can ask yourself what channels you prefer best to promote your products or services; weblog, Twitter, email newsletter, Facebook or what else is available. But I think in the end it is your customers that decide how they want to receive your information and what tools or platforms you should use.
Let your customers choose and make the decision for you. Even if that means you have to be everywhere and do it all.
