Stumbling along the internet today I came across the website of a company that promotes itself as a new, highly effective way to advertise online and influence word-of-mouth discussion.
Make believe
The idea of the automated system promoted on this website is to give marketeers the possibility to identify key forum conversations and insert relevant messages as ‘posts’ to be absorbed by the community as expert content. One of the greatest advantages of this system is – according to this company – the ability to speak to consumers in a conversational tone. Your post is viewed as an authentic posting by forum users, not ignored like an advertisement.
Wrong
I think it is wrong to use social media this way. Social media is about conversation and dialog. Of course you can use social media to promote your products. There is nothing wrong with that. But please don’t use automated systems here. And moreover do not use automated systems or robots that pretend to be human. Nobody likes to be cheated and eventually it will work against you.
