Make your visitors click

What Makes Them Clickis a very interesting weblog by Susan Weinschenk. Susan (aka the Brain Woman) has a Ph.D. in Psychology and writes about how people think, work and relate. She is the author of Neuro Web Design, a book you must read.

In her post Bit-Sized Chunks Of Info Are Best Susan makes a point about progressive disclosure on Internet sites. Or, in other words, present your information in small portions and make your visitors click when they want to know more.

Susan is right. People don’t read big chunks of text on a web page (screen). Therefore you should feed them with small portions. And you must not be afraid to ask your visitors to click.

Small portions of text – with clear headers and subheaders  - are not only easy to read. You also prevent having problems with information under the fold. But don’t think it is easy. Your website needs to be close to perfect.

  • asking your visitors to click means you have to provide them with fool-proof navigation
  • people need to know from the start what information they can expect to find on your website
  • wherever people go, they must always know where they are (breadcrumbs)
  • and it must be easy to go one or more steps back

Writing is not only deleting all superfluous words and texts. Writing is also cutting. Cutting your content in small attractive parts.
