How To Promote Your Product – Viral Marketing

July 2, 2010

If you want to promote your product it might be a good idea to make it part of a video or a game. Put it on the Internet and if it is funny or interesting enough people start sharing it. Then there is a chance it gets viral and you could be able to reach millions of people.

A good example of promoting a not so very sexy product this way is Blendtec, a company that makes blenders. The owner of the company started putting videos on the Internet in which he tryes to blend all kind of different items in his blender. From golf balls to oysters to mobile phones.

The videos became a hit, sales increased dramatically and Blendtec is now considered as one of the finest examples of  viral marketing campaigns.

Creativity

Sounds like a good idea to promote your products this way. But, as with a lot of things, it is easier said than done.

Recording a video is simple. Buy yourself a camcorder and start rolling. Programming a game may be a bit more difficult, but you can hire people to do that.

The biggest challenge however is to come up with an idea that is original, interesting, funny or addictive. To be able to do that you need to be creative. That is the hard part and there is no recipe for success.

Web browser

A good example of something that has the potential to become viral is what Google has done to promote the new version of their Chrome web browser.

How to promote the new version of a web browser – a not so very exciting product - and how to make it part of a viral marketing campaign.

The solution is simple (now we know the result). It is about browsing the Internet and it is about speed. Answer a number of search related questions by using the build-in browser function and try to do that as fast as possible.

Your campaign

Try to come up with ideas for a viral marketing campaign for the product or service you sell. The idea is the hard part. As soon as you know what you want to do it gets easier.

You may well end up with a great viral marketing campaign that is not expensive and at the same time will give you maximum exposure.
