Google Caffeine – three miles of paper every second

June 9, 2010

Yesterday Google has announced the completion of a new web indexing system called Caffeine.

According to Google, Caffeine provides 50 percent fresher results and it offers the largest collection of web content ever.

Faster and more accurate

Searching the web is really searching Google’s index of the web. Because of the structure of this index, not all web contents was updated on a regular basis. With Caffeine, Google says it is analyzing the web in small portions. Making it possible for Google to find relevant information more accurate and much faster than ever before.

Caffeine indexes web pages on an enormous scale. Processing hundreds of thousands of pages in parallel every second. If this were a pile of paper it would grow three miles taller every second, according to Google.

Relies more on keywords

When you are involved in marketing, it may be important to know how Caffeine affects search results.

It looks like Google has changed their algorithm’s (again) with the introduction of Caffeine. Google Caffeine relies more on keywords. So if you want to improve or maintain your position in Google, you have to take much more care of your keywords.

In real-time

Caffeine is Google’s response to Microsoft’s search engine Bing. But Google also has to deal with Twitter and Facebook launching their own real-time search engines.

Therefore real-time plays an important role in Google Caffeine too. More effort is made to display information that is as up to date as possible.

Your position

It looks like Google Caffeine is a major change and will affect the search results. Because Caffeine is faster, more accurate and more up to date. But what the effect (if any) will be on your company’s position in Google’s search results is not clear yet.

It may therefore be a good idea to keep a close eye on your position in Google.
