Get out of the way

June 2, 2010

There are people that say you should not make it too easy for your competitors to gather information about your products. Therefore they advise against making all your information available on your website. And if you want to put all the information there, at least part of it should only be available on request, after filling in an extensive form.

People that think like this are wrong. Very wrong. Because they put their competitors in first place.

They don’t like you

There are a few things your website’s visitors don’t like

  • they don’t like to do more work than is absolutely necessary to get the information they want
  • they don’t like to wait until you are prepared to give them permission to get the information they want
  • they don’t like to give you all kind of information about themselves
  • and they definitely will not like you when you do this to them

Get away

So what you need to do is get out of the way. Don’t stand between your information and your website’s visitors. Give them all the information they want (and if possible more than that) at the moment they want it. That is right-away. They will love you for it.

Your boss will love you too if you are able to convert visitors into happy customers. But you can be sure that is not going to happen when you keep on putting your competitors in first place.
