In a post about inbound (Internet) marketing I read ‘… and probably like most people I don’t answer the phone when I don’t recognize the number.’
Now this post is about spam and about a private phone, so it could make sense to be careful who to answer. But it is not the sort of statement you would expect from a commercial or marketing point of view.
What I learned more than 20 years ago was
- pick up the phone before it rings three times
- smile while you dial and
- The Match (never let your customer wait longer than it takes a match to burn)
Not answering the phone was out of the question. (And that was in a time we decided to send a reply to an enquiry within two weeks!)
Times have changed. The old rules are more important than ever before. Your customers want information now. Not tomorrow or later today. Now!
So you better pick up that phone when your customers calls. Otherwise they will be gone.
