Cold calling – hot or not ?

January 13, 2010

According to Wikipedia cold calling is “the process of approaching prospective customers or clients, typically via telephone, who were not expecting such an interaction. The word “cold” is used because the person receiving the call is not expecting a call or has not specifically asked to be contacted by a sales person.”

Change the word ‘telephone’ by the word ‘e-mail’ and we are talking about spam.

Strangely enough there are a lot of companies and marketeers that not only still use cold calling as a marketing tool, but that are also promoting it.

I think cold calling is very 20th century. And I cannot imagine that, despite all positive stories on the internet, cold calling can still be successful today.  While everybody is talking about permission marketing, opt-in/opt-out and confirmation e-mails and authorities are banning unsolicited e-mail and spam.

Maybe cold calling should be banned too. What do you think?
