Looks like this week is Facebook-week for me. Trying to uncover the secrets of Facebook. And I don’t know whether it is me or Facebook, but it sure is not easy.
As I wrote in my post 3 Important Tips For Facebook B2B Marketinga few days ago, to me Facebook looks a lot like Sharepoint 2007 when it comes to user-friendliness. And that is not good.
It took me some time to uncover the secrets of the Facebook Business Pages and vanity URL that I mentioned in my previous post and I must admit I was not completely right there.
Create A Business Page
I thought it was possible (or even necessary) to create a business page in Facebook without first creating a profile. Because when a business page is connected to a personal profile you would have a problem when this person leaves the company. You would then end up with a Facebook Business Page belonging to a person that has no longer any connection with the business. But I was wrong about that and I try to post about ownership next week.
So before you start configuring a business page you first need to create a personal profile. In case you already have a personal profile you can use that one. Then do as follows.
- Make sure you are logged-in in your personal profile
- Type ”www.facebook.com/pages” in the address box of your browser and hit Enter
- Click on the “+Create Page” link
- Under “Create a page for …” select “Brand, product or organisation”
- Give the page a name in the “Page Name” box
- Tick the box “I am the official representative …”
- And click on “Create Official Page”
You are now the owner of an official Facebook Business Page. This page can be configured in pretty much the same way as you configure your personal Facebook profile.
In your personal profile you can access your business page by clicking on “Account/Manage Pages” and you are able to make more business pages if need be.
Vanity URL
A vanity URL is a customized URL for your Facebook (business) page. Making it possible to change the URL of your page from “www.facebook.com/somethingthatnobodyunderstandsoremembers” to a URL like “www.facebook.com/yourcompanyname”. This way your Facebook Business Page URL looks a lot more professional and is much easier to remember. This is how it works.
- Make sure you are logged-in
- Type ”www.facebook.com/username” in the address box of your browser and hit Enter
- Click on “Set Username for Your Pages”
- Select the page for which you want to change the URL
- Enter the name you want to use in the URL of your business page
However, before you are able to change the URL of the business page you need to have at least 25 fans. If you have less, you are not able (yet) to change the URL.
Next week I will try to come back to the Facebook Business Page ownership issues. So watch this space.
