There have been more than 20 billion Tweets since Twitter started in 2006. Only two months ago the 15 billion mark was reached. That is 5 billion Tweets in two months, or about 83 million Tweets per day and almost 1000 Tweets every second.
Although there is a search function on Twitter, it may be difficult for people to find references to your company or your products in this enormous amount of information. You should therefore use hashtags.
A hashtag exists of the #-sign followed by a keyword. The hashtag enables yout to tag your Tweets. By clicking on a hashtag in a Tweet, people are able to find all related Tweets using that same hashtag.
But if you use hashtags do it right.
- Use a hashtag that makes sense
If you are for instance selling mobile cranes, a good hashtag could be #mobilecranes or #mobcrane. Using capitals has no effect on the hashtag. So #MobCrane will give you the same results as #mobcrane.
- Use a short hashtag
Using a short hashtag leaves you more space for your message. Therefore using #mobcrane could be better than using #mobilecranes.
- Avoid doubles
Before you start using a hashtag check whether the same hashtag is not already used by others.
- Use it
After you got yourself a nice hashtag make sure you use it in as many of your Tweets (if not all) as possible.
- Promote your hashtag
Once you have started using your hashtag, it is possible to start promoting it. You can do that on your own platforms (website, blog etc.) but you can also encourage others to use your hashtag when they tweet about your company or products.
- Create hashtags for the occasion
You do not always have to stick to your one standard hashtag. If you are for instance organizing a seminar, you can use #mobcraneseminar in all Tweets related to this seminar and refer to it in other activities promoting the seminar.
Using hashtags in your Tweets helps you to promote your company and products, making Twitter a strong marketing tool.
