It looks like giving tips is a quite popular activity among bloggers. There are an awful lot of posts giving tips for all kind of different activities, platforms, programs and applications.
Posts with tips are popular, they are Tweeted and re-Tweeted on a large scale. A lot of Tweets coming into my Twitter account are about tips and you often see the same post coming by several times.
I don’t mind reading about tips. I don’t mind at all when those tips make sense and are really helpful. But unfortunately that is not always the case.
Time for a few tips on giving tips.
- Don’t overdo it
I sometimes see posts with more than 50 tips. Who reads 50+ tips and remembers them all? And often in cases like this you don’t need to read the post to know that at least half of these tips make no sense at all.
Give no more than 5 or 6 tips at a time. It is great when you have more good tips. But in that case spread them over time in two or more separate posts. It gives you something to post about and your readers will be coming back to your weblog for more.
- Your tips must make sense
There is a lot of hammering on an open door going on in the blogosphere. Your tips need to make sense to generate interest in your posts and make people return to your blog. It’s not the number of tips that counts, it’s the value of the tips that is important.
- Try to be original
Don’t just copy tips from others. Use your own experience and share with others what you have learned. Make it something personal. Take a job you have done and share with us how you were able to overcome the difficulties you encountered.
If you have more tips on giving tips, you are welcom to let me know. But not too many please !
