3 Important Tips For Facebook B2B Marketing

July 27, 2010

facebook b2b marketing ceekueThe last couple of days I have broken my head over a number of Facebook problems. Searching for answers and solutions, I realized there are three important issues that I need to take care of. And that I want to share with you.

  1. Create a special page for a business
When I first started a business page in Facebook I made the mistake to first login in my personal account and then click on the link to create a business page.  A business page created like this has a number of disadvantages.
You therefore better start with creating a completely new Facebook account. You do this by clicking on “Create a page for a celebrity, band or business” on the Facebook.com page. And go from there.

  2. Create a vanity URL
If people search for your company on Facebook, there is a big change they will just type in www.facebook.com/your-company-name.  Unfortunately the URL Facebook creates for you looks (very) different. The good thing however is that you are able to create a so-called vanity URL. To do this login and then go to Facebook.com/username where you can change the URL of your page to something that is easier to remember and easier to be found by your customers.

  3. Create a homepage
The business account you create has three standard tabs; Wall, Info and Photos. The Info tab is the default homepage of your Facebook account. Many people change that and set the Wall tab to be the homepage. There is one disadvantage doing that. As soon as your customers start engaging with you and start attributing to your Facebook account, you have no control anymore over what is visible on your wall/homepage.
I therefore advise you to build a custom page/tab and use that as your homepage. That way you have full control over what people see when they land on your Facebook account.

Although setting up a Facebook account is quite easy, I found it is sometimes very difficult to make changes to the default settings. Navigating the different menus feels like working in Sharepoint 2007, the platform I love to hate because of its obscure navigation structure.

Hi Sharon, You have to go to Account / Account Settings and there you are able to change your UserName (= the URL for your Facebook account). Be aware of the fact you can set the UserName only once. So you have to do it right the first time. You are not able to change it again later on.
Success & Rgds, Hans
